Wind Farms Raise Local Temperatures: New Study
Wind Farms Raise Local Temperatures: New Study
Follow: @SlateViral, Facebook.com/SlateVideo Watch more: Youtube.com/slatester, SlateV.com Wind power might be touted as an energy source that helps reduce global warming, but a new study says turbines may actually be heating things up—at least at the local level. Using satellite data, researchers working in Texas have shown that wind farms have created a rise in nighttime ground air temperatures. The study, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, focused on an area in west-central Texas, which has seen a boom in the construction of wind farms in recent years. Why is the warming happening? Air further above ground, which tends to be warmer at night, was being brought down to ground level by spinning turbines. The rise in temperature--less than one degree Celsius over a decade—would likely stop along with construction. And it's far from the kind of broad climate impact generated by fossil fuel use. But some Texas residents may be sweating a little more at night, so clean wind energy can keep us all a bit cooler.

Altaeros Energies - Airborne Wind Turbine Prototype 2012
Altaeros Energies - Airborne Wind Turbine Prototype 2012
www.altaerosenergies.com - First public video of the 35-foot-wide Airborne Wind Turbine. The scale prototype harnessed strong winds up to 350 feet high to produce over twice the power of traditional wind turbines. The prototype was tested in Limestone Maine by Altaeros Energies, a wind energy company formed out of MIT. The Airborne Wind Turbine uses a helium-filled, inflatable shell to ascend to higher altitudes where winds are more consistent and over five times stronger than those reached by traditional tower-mounted turbines. The automated lifting technology is adapted from aerostats, industrial cousins of passenger blimps that for decades have lifted heavy communications and radar equipment into the air for long periods of time. Altaeros is developing its first product to reduce energy costs by up to 65 percent by displacing expensive fuel used to power diesel generators at remote industrial, military, and village sites. The nuclear power plant accident triggered by the Great East Japan Earthquake has drawn new attention to renewable energy. According to a study by the Ministry of the Environment, among the various types of renewable energy, wind power has the highest introduction potential by far with an installed capacity of 1.9 billion kW. However, introduction would require legal acts, supporting projects, and technological innovation. At Kyushu University, a large-scale demonstration facility for a wind power system called the wind-lens turbine was completed at the Ito Campus. While providing power to the campus, tests to increase the scale of the system will be conducted. For the next stage, Professor Yuji Ohya, one of the developers of this system, plans to build an offshore wind farm in Hakata Bay to conduct field tests, and also has a concept to establish a Multi-source offshore energy farm on the Genkai Sea in the future.
